Breathe In (2015)

Breathe In is an artistic family drama about an exchange student from London who comes to New York and the entanglement of forbidden attraction that explodes into both magical emotional connection and harrowing devastation, told with stunning visual and aural appeal.

It mixes so much beauty with so much ugliness, showcasing both human achievement and human frailty, the messy mix of the things we desire, things that make us proud, things that bring us pain, and things that make us ashamed.

The story is spectacularly performed so substantively that you feel what each character feels through their looks, eyes, face, and body movements, when often nothing even needs to be said for the communication to be thunderously felt.

This exploration of the internal human reveals a wrenching look into the choices we make, while presenting themes of freedom and societal constraint, of personal goals and those thrust upon us by others, of passion and responsibility, of fantasy and reality, of betrayal and belonging, all with minimal scripting or preaching.

I can understand that this genre of movie is not for everyone, like those who crave explosions and car chases, alien invasions and loud special effects, but for those who appreciate an impeccably told human character story, entirely palpable chemistry and emotion throughout, the darkness lurking behind a picture-perfect family, a wondrously hypnotizing soundtrack, and sensational visuals throughout, this is one for you.
